Types of Steel Materials

Steel is the foundation for heavy equipment, household items, and tools. It plays a significant part in manufacturing and construction. Steel is not created equal. The type of steel that you choose will have a dramatic impact on the strength and durability of a construction project.

The quantity of impurities, or additions determines the classification. This is what makes every type unique for specific application.

Low-carbon steels, available in a variety of forms, are the most commonly employed steels by metal fabricators. They can be found in beams, pipes, and other structural components. They are also ideal for welding fabrications because they are able to be easily shaped and formed without losing strength or quality.

The medium carbon steels are known for their hardness and contain a carbon content less than 1.75 percent. They are the ideal choice for cookware and tools that are durable. They’re also commonly employed to create parts for cars and other mechanical equipment.

High-carbon steels are employed for parts that require strong strength and resistance to corrosion. This includes anchor bolts, rods and tools.

Alloy steels possess a broad range of useful properties that can be modified to meet the needs of each application. For instance, tungsten is able to increase the strength and wear-resistance of high strength alloy steels. Chromium increases the ductility of stainless steels and raises their heat resistance. Molybdenum on however, increases the toughness and hardness of alloy steels.
